Saturday's championship basketball recaps (3/5)

Look below for recaps from all of Saturday's Sac-Joaquin Section championship basketball games.

DIVISION 4 GIRLS
Modesto Christian 71, Calaveras 52
The Crusaders (23-8) rode their pressure defense and a big game from freshman Charise Holloway to their third consecutive D4 title. Holloway, playing on the Power Balance Pavilion floor for the first time, didn't show the nerves as she led MC with 16 points and 22 rebounds. Her rebounds were a D4 title game record and tie her for tops overall in the Section record book.
All five of the Crusaders' starters scored in double figures; the other four were: Danielle Thompson (12) and 11 points apiece from Vanessa Cagle, Mariah Brown and Alexus Tillman.
Nikki Gleason led Calaveras with 21 points and teammate Maddy Cox added eight rebounds.
It's the third straight victory over a Mother Lode League team in the finals for the Crusaders, their last two victims were Argonaut and Linden.

DIVISION 2 GIRLS
St. Mary's 70, Del Oro 65
In what turned out to be a dynamite game, the Rams (25-2) got a hige 3-pointer from senior guard Ali Gibson with 1:35 left and held on for the victory over the Golden Eagles. Gibson finished with 25 points and seven rebounds.
The teams traded the lead throughout the game, with Del Oro holding a nine-point advantage at one point early. But the Rams kept battling back behind their full-court pressure defense.
Sophomore point guard Onome Jemirigbe spearheaded the St. Mary's defense and also scored 23 points. She added five steals.
Madeline Campbell and Crystal Sewell each led Del Oro with 23 points. Sewell also led the Golden Eagles with eight rebounds.
It was the fourth Section title in a row for the Rams, and the program's 12th overall.

DIVISION 4 BOYS
Colfax 53, Amador 44
The Falcons (22-9) suffered a major setback early in the game when leading scorer Chase Mosier went down with a leg injury, but they received contributions from several players en route to the victory. Mosier was averaging 20 points a game, but only played for 4 minutes, scoring two points. In his place, Austin Oberg scored 15 points and center Ben Buell added 10 points and five rebounds.
The Buffaloes were led by Clinton Tremelling (15 points, three assists), Max Perry (10 points) and Austin Johnson (eight points, 13 rebounds).
It was the fourth boys basketball Section title in Colfax history, all of those championships coming since 2004. In the last eight years, Colfax is 24-4 in the postseason.

DIVISION 2 BOYS
St. Mary's 61, Antelope 50
In a matchup between one of the most successful programs in Section boys basketball history and a school in the playoffs for the first time, experience ruled the day.
The Rams (21-10) pulled away for the victory thanks to an 18-10 fourth quarter. Alex Simmons scored 20 points to lead the Rams, and he also grabbed 11 rebounds. Teammate Chris Magalotti added 14 points and 14 rebounds and Justin Cox pitched in with 14 points.
Antelope stayed with St. Mary's for most of the game, pulling to within one at 43-42, but was never able to take the lead. The Titans, in the playoffs for the first time, were led by Jarvis Watkins and Isaiah Ellis (11 points apiece).
It was the eighth Section title in St. Mary's history; the Rams are 8-5 in championship games.

DIVISION 1 GIRLS
St. Francis 57, Lincoln-Stockton 49
The St. Francis girls basketball program has won more than its share of Section titles. But until this year, the Troubadours had never won a D1 crown. That all changed after they held off a talented and tenacious Trojans team.
The senior guard tandem of Jolise Limcaco and Briana Charles each scored 12 points to lead St. Francis to the victory. The Troubadours couldn't miss in the first quarter, jumping out to a 24-16 lead. But the Trojans chipped away, getting to within two points several times late in the game.
The Trojans were led by junior forward Nyre Harris' 14 points and 12 points from senior guard Devyn Weymouth. Lincoln, in the playoffs 22 times, was seeking its first Section title.
It was the eighth Section title for St. Francis, which won D3 crowns in 1991-94 and 2002 and won D2 banners in 2007 and 2008.

DIVISION 1 BOYS
Sheldon 84, Jesuit 69
The Huskies (23-7) won their second consecutive Section title behind 27 points and 14 rebounds from senior forward Darius Nelson. Sheldon is coached by Joey Rollings, who won a Section title with the Huskies' girls team in 2006 as well.
Sheldon received 18 points apiece from Ramon Eaton and D'Erryl Williams and 10 points form Dakarai Allen.
Jesuit, the DRL runner-up to Sheldon, got 17 points apiece from Akachi Okugo and Parker Uu. Broan Glodowski added 15 points.
It was the third meeting between the DRL rivals, and Sheldon won all three. Both advance to the CIF NorCal Tournament, which begins next week. NorCal brackets for all divisions will be released Sunday afternoon.

Friday's championship basketball recaps

Look below for the recaps from Friday's Sac-Joaquin Section Basketball Championships from Power Balance Pavilion.

DIVISION 5 GIRLS
Bradshaw Christian 44, Brookside Christian 32
The Pride (22-9) jumped out to an early 19-7 lead and cruised from there in Bradshaw Christian's fourth consecutive Section championship in a row. Senior Jordie Smith, in her fourth Section title game, led the Pride with 17 points. She added 11 rebounds.
Her teammate Lauren Beyer, also a senior, had 14 points and a game-high 13 rebounds.
Brookside Christian, in the program's first girls basketball Section championship, featured a roster of only six players. One of those players, freshman Tiara Tucker, entered the game averaging 35.7 points in the postseason, but was held to 11. Bradshaw Christian sophomore Ashlee Jones was assigned Tucker defensively, holding her well below her scoring average.
Tucker made two free throws in the final seconds of the game, giving her 118 for her four-game Section postseason, which ranks her No. 2 on the all-time list, behind Nevada Union's Kellie Cook (149).

DIVISION 5 BOYS
Vacaville Christian 90, Bradshaw Christian 63
The Falcons (25-6) used a 29-11 third-quarter advantage to pull away from their Sierra Delta League rivals in winning the school's first-ever Section championship. Brandon Barnes scored 29 points, including seven 3-pointers, to lead Vacaville Christian. Barnes' seven 3-pointers are a Division 5 record and tie him for the overall Section championship record.
Teammate Jake Abel added 22 points and Torry Arthur had 18 points and a team-high seven rebounds.
Scott Ecklund scored 23 points to lead Bradshaw Christian; he was helped out by 15 points from Jake Adkins and 12 from Ron Henry.
The game was tight at the half, with the Falcons clinging to a 44-40 lead. But Vacaville Christian controlled the flow in the second half. The Falcons' 90 points were three away from the overall Section record.

DIVISION 3 GIRLS
Sacramento 63, Vanden 50
The Dragons (26-5) held almost every Vikings player in check, forcing 28 turnovers, in the victory over a team that beat them during the regular season. Sacramento was led by senior guard Fantasia Hilliard, who scored 26 points, had four steals and grabbed seven rebounds despite her 5-foot-3 frame.
Teammate Allie Green added 13 points and Jasmine Ware had 10 points and a team-high eight rebounds.
Vanden was led by senior forward Erimma Amarikwa, who had 28 points and 11 rebounds. Amarikwa is going to San Diego State University next year.
It was the eighth consecutive Section championship appearance for the Dragons, and their second title. They won the D3 title in 2007 as well.

Division 3 boys
Sacramento 53, Center 48
The Dragons (27-5) parlayed an 11-0 run to end the third quarter into a close victory over the Cougars. 6-foot-11 center Robert Garrett had 15 points and nine rebounds to lead Sacramento, which won its third Section title in a row.
Aaron Cameron added 14 points for the Dragons.
Christopher Smith led Center with 13 points and Andrew Zan added 11.

Former SJS women's players in March Madness

If you're a Sac-Joaquin Section fan then there's one team in the NCAA women's basketball tournament you should be rooting for: San Diego State. The Aztecs count four players on their rosters from the SJS. Those four - and injured Tennessee forward Vicki Baugh - are the five players with SJS ties who we could find competing in this year;s women's March Madness. Good luck to all, and especially good luck to the Aztecs!

JESSIKA BRADLEY, San Diego State (Sacramento). Bradley's teams never won a Section title, they were runners-up for three straight years. But her senior year, she led the Dragons to a NorCal title and state runner-up finish. The junior who transfered in from Baylor is averaging 7.4 points and a team-high 6.5 rebounds a game for the Aztecs.

COCO DAVIS, San Diego State (Rio Americano, Sacramento). Played her first three years at Rio Americano before transfering to Sacramento where the Dragons won the Sac-Joaquin Section D3 title over St. Mary's. The junior starer at guard is averaging 5.7 points and 4.3 rebounds a game.

QUENESE DAVIS, San Diego State (Rio Americano). Was a four-year varsity star at Rio Americano. She's carved out an excellent career with the Aztecs as well. A senior, Quenese starts in the backcourt alongside her sister Coco. She's averaging 13.0 points and just over five assists a game for the Aztecs. She's the San Diego State career assists leader.

KIM SPINARDI, San Diego State (Golden Valley). Spinardi was a star at Golden Valley, including a senior year that saw her average 17 points and 7.5 assists a game. The senior guard - a MWC all-academic honoree - is averaging 1.1 points in about eight minutes a game.

VICKI BAUGH, Tennessee (Sacramento). The former Dragons superstar is on the Volunteers' roster but is redshirting this year - her junior year - after a setback while rehabilitating her surgically repaired knee. According to reports, Baugh has been traveling with the team during the postseason.

Men's basketball players from the SJS in March Madness

By our count, there are nine players from Sac-Joaquin Section schools competing in the men's basketball March Madness this year. Check below for their current colleges, former high schools and a note on what they did in high school if we have it. Congratulations to all!

TRAY BRITT, New Mexico State (Hogan). Britt averaged 19 points a game for Hogan his senior year. He's a senior with NMSU and averaging 0.9 points a game.

CHASE TAPLEY, San Diego State (Sacramento). Tapley led the Dragons to two SJS titles and one NorCal title. True freshman is averaging 7.8 points a game for the Aztecs.

JAMES NUNNALLY, UC Santa Barbara (Weston Ranch). Nunnally, a junior, is averaging 15 points a game for the Gauchos. In 2007, he led Weston Ranch to the SJS D3 championship game, where they lost to Sacramenbto (and Tapley).

NATE GARTH, New Mexico (Capital Christian). Garth played his freshman and sophomore years at Capital Christian before moving out of state. The sophomore is averaging 4.2 points and 1.7 assists a game for the Lobos.

D.J. SEELEY, California (Tokay/Modesto Christian). Seeley was at Tokay for his first three high school years before transferring to Modesto Christian. His teams won two SJS titles in that span. The sophomore is averaging 2.4 points a game for the Golden Bears.

TERRENCE JENNINGS, Louisville (Capital Christian). Jennings spent his junior year at Capital Christian in the 2004-05 season, where he averaged 17 points a game in leading the Cougars to the SJS championship game. He's a sophomore at Louisville where he's averaging 5.2 points a game.

FRED ELLIS, Baylor (Sacramento). Was part of SJS championship team in 2007 and SJS runner-up team in 2006. Redshirt sophomore is averaging 1.3 points a game for the Bears.

WAYNE HUNTER, St. Mary's College (Valley). Hunter led Valley to the SJS D2 championship his senior year in 2004. Went to a prep school after that then on to St. Mary's. The redshirt senior averaged 11.0 points a game in the Gaels' first seven games before he tore his ACL, ending his season.

ELSTON TURNER, Washington (Roseville). Turner spent three high-scoring years at Roseville High before moving to Houston. The sophomore is averaging 5.1 points a game for the Huskies.
