SJS Basketball championship recaps for FRIDAY (3/1)

DIVISION III BOYS
Modesto Christian 66, Sierra 54
Top-seeded Modesto Christian added to its Section legacy with a D3 victory over Sierra in the Friday nightcap at Sleep Train Arena. The Crusaders won the program's 15th Section championship since 1997 and, with the D3 crown, have won Section titles in every division except for D2.
Senior guard T.J. Wallace led the way for Modesto Christian with 20 points, while Anthony Townes added 10 points and 14 rebounds. Teammate Raymond Bowles added 14 points.
Sierra, which led 10-8 after the first quarter and only trailed 26-20 at the half, was led by Guillermo Nunez's 19 points and Emmanuel Elijah's 17. Justin Patton added nine points and 11 rebounds.

DIVISION III GIRLS
Christian Brothers 61, Vanden 56
Christian Brothers, the top seed, jumped out to an early lead after the first quarter and held on from there. This game was a competitive up-and-down contest where the final outcome wasn't decided until the Falcons made their free throws at the end of the game. Christian Brothers got 18 points from junior forward Alicia Gonzalez and 15 points form point guard Niel Valmores. Teammate Ana Burch added 12 rebounds.
Vanden got 17 points and nine rebounds form Mariah Williams and 16 points from Toni Taylor. Their teammate Kayla Blair added seven points and 13 rebounds.

DIVISION V BOYS
Capital Christian 40, Brookside Christian 39
Capital Christian, the No. 2 seed, jumped out to an early lead then hung on late, with Tyler Jennings making a free throw with 0.7 seconds left to win the game. It was the second consecutive Section championship for the Cougars, and their second such title in school history.
Trey Belton and Uchenna Iroegbu led Capital Christian with nine points apiece, while Belton added a game-high 11 rebounds. Treyveon Merriweather led Brookside Christian, the No. 4 seed, with eight points while teammate Jashandeep Kahlon had 11 rebounds.
Capital Christian led 27-16 at the half and appeared to be well on its way to an easy victory before Brookside Christian rallied, eventually tying the score in the final seconds before Jennings was fouled at the top of the key.

DIVISION V GIRLS
Brookside Christian 72, Capital Christian 28
Top-seeded Brookside Christian left little doubt after jumping out to a 28-4 first-quarter lead en route to its second straight Sac-Joaquin Section championship. The Knights forced 37 turnovers and led 48-13 at the half.
Brookside Christian, the defending Division V state champion, was led by junior guard Tiara Tucker's 24 points. Tucker's last point, a free-throw in the game's final minute, put her at 300 career points scored in the Section playoffs. She's No. 3 on the all-time list, behind Nevada Union's Kellie Cook (371) and St. Mary's guard Jacki Gemelos (365). Tucker also had nine steals and five rebounds. Her teammate Lauren Rabena added 13 points.
Nicole Colbert came off the bench to lead Capital Christian with seven points.
